Born in 1945, weeks before the end of the war, Steven Lowenstein, emigrated to the United States from Nazi Germany just in the nick of time. He grew up to be a scholar and won of the National Book Award for his book “The Jewish Cultural Tapestry.”

RIP Steven Lowenstein. An essential and distinguished scholar of German Jewry; I knew him very slightly, if at all, but this, on his passing, shows him to be a man even more remarkable than his work, which is saying something indeed.
