I found out this morning that Sarah Hegazi had passed and had likely taken her own life. She was by all definitions of the word, a survivor. She shared her story with me and I failed her.

Sara Higazi took her life 💔. She wrote:
” To my sisters
I tried to survive and failed, forgive me.
To my friends,
The experience has been too hard, and I’m too weak to resist, forgive me.
To the world,
You’ve been incredibly difficult, but I forgive.
Sarah Higazi”

As we commemorate #Pride, heart-shattering to learn the beautiful soul Sarah Hegazi has left us.
Sarah had been detained, assaulted, fired from her job, made to live in exile–all because Egyptian authorities accused her of raising the rainbow flag at a @mashrou3leila concert.

This cute little angel ended her life today. Her name is Sarah Hegazi, she’s an Egyptian LGBT+ & woman’s rights activist. She was arrested because she raised the rainbow flag in a concert. She had to flee the country & was granted asylum in Canada. We need universal protection

Queer Egyptian activist Sarah Higazi took her own life last night. She bravely raised the rainbow flag at a Mashrou Leila concert in 2017 and was jailed for it. In prison, she was tortured and eventually exiled to Canada. This world killed her. Say her name.
