We lost a legend this week in Harold “Herky” Payne. I was glad to have called him my friend and was honored to have gone into the Farragut High School Hall of Fame in the same year. Herky hired me as a JV baseball coach in 1986 I am greatful he gave me that opportunity. Listening to his stories from playing football for General Neyland, playing in the College World Series, and winning a State title with Coach Heatherly. He will be missed. Heaven added another Saint. Thanks for the memories Coach Payne. You touched many lives. Prayers for the family.
Coach Herky Payne passed away last night. I had the privilege of continuing to see him over the years as he was a greeter at the church I attend. As he wished me “Good morning” on Sundays, I always heard “Big ‘n” in my head. I will miss seeing him.
