Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives are investigating a crash involving two boats that killed a man yesterday in a channel in the Great South Bay, south of Babylon.David Nostrand was operating a 17-foot 1981 Boston Whaler southbound in West Fox Creek Channel when his vessel struck a northbound 22-foot 1987 Activator motor boat, operated by Ian Morgan, at approximately 2:40 p.m.
A passenger on the Activator, Zachary McCarthy, 25, Lindenhurst, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
Nostrand, 58, of Farmingdale, and Morgan, 19, of Lindenhurst, were transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip for treatment of minor injuries.
Both boats were impounded for safety checks.
It was a tragic day on the water yesterday.

Suffolk Police are still investigating what happened. We know two boats collided in the West Fox Creek Channel. No charges have been filed and drugs or alcohol were not believed to be involved. The boats have been impounded for safety checks.
Boaters we spoke to at the Cedar Beach Marina familiar with the area where the accident occurred said it’s a tricky area to navigate & that there have been a lot of boats on the water over the last few days and weeks.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
