So sad to hear that Amy Kaplan has died: a pathfinding scholar of U.S. empire, settler colonialism, and the insidious structures of justification which made them alternately invisible and laudable to ordinary Americans.

Shocked to read that Amy Kaplan has died. So many people have been lost to COVID (and other causes) recently. Kaplan’s Anarchy of Empire & Cultures of U.S. Imperialism were and continue to be precious & enabling books for me.

Today, I lost an indispensable mentor, Amy Kaplan. When I was deciding to go to Penn, one of my undergrad advisors cautioned me that Amy wasn’t the type who would give me a hug. And she didn’t, but that was OK. She always was there, in just the right ways, and I owe her much

“Manifest Domesticity” was one of the most important articles I read as a young grad student for my development as a scholar in c19 American Studies. And Cultures of US Imperialism created a whole scene for my thinking in those days. RIP Amy Kaplan.
