FORMER SEN. ROBERT M. “BOB” DEARING DIES AT 85; REPRESENTED FRANKLIN COUNTY IN MISSISSIPPI SENATE FOR MANY YEARS
By Sean Dunlap
Franklin AdvocateLong-time Mississippi state Sen. Robert M. “Bob” Dearing of Natchez — who represented Franklin County in the upper house of the Legislature — died Thursday at his home in neighboring Adams County.
He was 85 years old.
The Democrat was first elected to the Mississippi Senate in 1979 and served until he was unseated by Republican Melanie Sojourner in 2011. Four years later, he beat Sojourner to return to office and served until 2019 at which time he did not seek re-election.
Sojourner retook the seat, which represents Franklin, Adams, Amite and Pike counties, during the most recent election cycle.
Dearing, who considered himself a conservative Democrat, made a name for himself in the legislature thanks to his involvement with efforts to improve education, legalize casino gambling, address animal cruelty and modernize the state’s highway infrastructure.
Dearing, who was born in 1935, was the son of Robert V. and Weenonah Montgomery Dearing. He and his wife, Shelly, were the parents of three children, Bo, Paige and Daye.
Funeral services for Dearing were incomplete as of 8:15 p.m., Thursday evening. Laird Funeral Home of Natchez is in charge of arrangements.
My heart is shattered… good friend and former #MSLEG State Sen Bob M. Dearing has left this world and now in accordance with his famous Facebook posts – “In the morning when I rise, give me Jesus,” and now he is. I’ll miss that smile and funny stories. He was a genuine, honest person, a statesman, a loving husband and dad, and a great friend. We had a running joke when I started lobbying that he called me “daughter” so folks wouldn’t be overly flirty. On that note… “Dad”, we’re gonna miss you beyond words. Godspeed to see Jesus all day every day; join me in lifting his beautiful family in our hearts and prayers. #InTheMorningWhenIRiseGiveMeJesus
My thoughts and prayers are with the the family of former State Sen. Bob Dearing. Sen. Dearing taught a government class at Co-Lin Natchez for many years. Our students learned so much from him and his many special guest speakers. Bob was a good friend to me and many others.

Sen. Bob Dearing was a smart, funny & kind man. As a young college graduate(20 years ago)he took time to engage & explain so much regarding to Senate & process to me when I’m sure he had much more important things to do. He was a friend and he will be missed. RIP – Mikell McLeod
