Meredith Jensen Latchaw,
Words cannot express the hole in my heart. I was blessed to have you in my life as a volleyball mom, mom of a student and most importantly, a friend. We will miss your smile, the way you filled a room, how we admired your steadfast committment to your family, friends, students, athletes and how to live a full blessed life. I am so grateful for our girls night a couple of weeks ago. Fly high my friend… you left the world a better place than you found it.
This is Meredith Latchaw.
She was a public school teacher like my parents.
People tell me she was a beautiful person.
Friday evening when we met her, we got to appreciate none of that. I wish we could.
My nineteen year old, twin daughters Camille (CSU) and Clarisse (CU) and I went up to the Piney Lake area north of Vail to set up a campsite ahead of the arrival of my wife and two other daughters. But as we settled in, gusty winds came up and knocked down a tree onto the campsite next to us.
The area is remote and there is no cell service. For what I believed was over an hour until paramedics got there, we did our best to help save her. I was able to find a nurse and an EMS worker when I rushed to Piney River Ranch where they could call for help. They were professional in their efforts and examples of compassion. Campers at the other site near us where really wonderful with the two children as Clarisse helped with her until I asked her to stay by the road to direct emergency responders. She asked people in any car that passed if they were a doctor or nurse. Camille did not leave Meredith for a moment for over an hour, trying to care for her until paramedics got there.
But paramedics could not save her and pronounced her dead before they could reach a medical helicopter.
My daughters love science in school. They remain friends with their science teachers even back to middle school. Camille wants to be a nurse. Her bit of training in nursing, I believe, helped us get Meredith breathing again for a time. But death steals from us.
She sounds like a wonderful teacher. I believe there is nothing better than a good teacher like my parents.
Meredith would have loved my daughters and they would have loved her.
May her husband Mark and two beautiful children be comforted in their loss.
This quote reminds me of my friend and colleague for 20+ years, Meredith Latchaw who left us suddenly and has shocked so many of us as she has become an angel to continue helping others. Those who knew her and were touched by her contagious smile, huge heart and her love of this planet. Although devastated, I was comforted to know that so many tried to help her and she did not leave this world alone. The Grandview and Rangeview families, students, athletes, her husband, children, mother and all who knew her are heartbroken and miss her terribly!
