A very sad day, with the passing of one of Pontyclun’s finest sons, Keith Pontin.
A Pontyclun boy, who started his football days here, then a professional career at Cardiff City & international honours with Wales, before returning to finish his career, at Pontyclun Football Club.
Our thoughts are with Janet & all Keith’s family.
Keith, a lovely man, who will be missed by all
SAD NEWS 📰💔
Former FA Wales and Cardiff City Football Club defender Keith Pontin has died aged 64.
Pontin, from Pontyclun, made 193 league appearances for Cardiff between 1976 and 1983.
He won two Wales caps, making his debut in the famous 4-1 win over England in 1980.
“It is with great sadness that the club has learned of the passing of former Bluebird Keith Pontin,” Cardiff said in a statement released on social media.
Pontin had been diagnosed with dementia in 2016, when aged 59.
In a BBC Wales interview two years later his family said they believed the condition was caused by years of heading the ball.
Pontin came through Cardiff’s youth ranks before making his senior debut in 1976.
He played for the club in the second tier for six seasons until they were relegated in 1981-82.
He joined Merthyr Tydfil in 1983 and later played for Barry Town

Today former Cardiff city player and Welsh international Keith Pontin died at the age of 64. Pontin made 193 appearances for Cardiff while at the club from 1976-1983 and he was capped twice for Wales in 1980. He was a centre-back who came through the Cardiff academy and made his first team debut on the opening day of the 1976/77 season. After Cardiff he joined Merthyr Tydfil and Barry Town before retiring in 1991. 5 years ago he was diagnosed with dementia which was linked to the weight of the footballs at the time and he was an advocate of raising awareness for helping those who were also effected by this. I personally knew Keith and he was a very kind man who I’m sure will be very much missed by everyone who knew him. Rest in Peace
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
