Baseball Player:

Ray Mirra Jr. is a quiet, intellectual, and moderate man with a love for baseball and all things related to it. He is also a dedicated fan. Recently he published an interesting article about his long-lasting love of the Cleveland Indians. It is an engrossing story that will endear many Indians fans to the team. I found myself drawn into the story, which took me off guard for a few paragraphs. In fact, I could not put the book down.

In 1990 the popular sport writer for the Inquirer wrote an article on the Philadelphia Flyers. In that piece he listed Ray Mirra as one of his favorite players. He compared him to two other Flyers that had long been in the Hall of Fame. Those two names are Wayne Gretzky and Joe Nielli. That article sparked off a minor controversy between Philadelphia Flyers owner Ted Leihaus and Ray regarding the choice of player. Things came to a head when Ray mentioned the quote in his latest book.

Leggie fired back on the topic stating that he signed no player that had a “line” or no “capability.” The implication was that by signing Ray he was choosing just to sign on to the Flyers instead of choosing the best player available. This caused more discussion and media heat. The Philadelphia Flyers later released a statement saying that the quoted comment was taken out of context and that the team would sign Ray Mirra Jr. at the appropriate time.

The team is very happy with his performance thus far. He has received numerous ice awards for his efforts. He is very worthy of that honor, as he fits the Flyers perfectly.

The question now becomes, why has Ray Jr. chosen to play for the Flyers? Why did the son want to sign with the Flyers? Why not continue playing for his family in Kitchener, Ontario? There have been rumblings in the family regarding this decision by the son. Is he trying to position himself to take over the family business someday?

This can be done easily if you play hockey. You can position yourself as an adviser to your son if you so choose. It seems that Ray’s first instinct is to sign with an NHL team so he can be close to his two brothers.

He will always be the biggest influence in the lives of his two brothers, but Ray is also a professional hockey player. Many consider him a top five or six player in the league. He might have a chance to play with players like Bobby Orr one day. Who knows?

As a Hockey Player:

Ray Jr. is just a kid playing hockey. As a professional, he has the chance to be an even better player and be the best hockey player in the National Hockey League. Who knows? That will happen one day. The Flyers are glad that Ray Mirra Jr. signed with their team.

What does it mean for the future for Ray Mirra Jr.?? He is developing a good relationship with Flyers’ head coach Peter Laviolette. The two share a great friendship. Ray is playing at a high level right now and will get an opportunity to show what he can do when he plays against other players at higher levels.

Ray has come a long way since he was a seventh-round draft pick by the Flyers in the 1996 draft. He is a much-improved player. Now is the time for him to start thinking about being a top-liner in the National Hockey League. It could be a great next step for Ray Mirra jr .

He also has a three-year career with the Phantoms of the American Hockey League. I am sure we’ll see a lot more from Ray Mirra Jr. in the near future.
