The newspaper refused to reimburse its reporters for Twitter Blue's monthly fee for personal accounts, "except in rare cases when it is necessary for reporting purposes."

This was mentioned by a spokesperson for The New York Times, who confirmed that the newspaper would not pay the monthly fee to obtain the blue verification mark on Twitter, hours after losing the mark.

On March 25, Twitter announced its intention to cancel the authentication mark from the accounts it obtained based on the old authentication system that was in force before the company launched its paid service (Twitter Blue).

The company said at the time that it would start canceling the old verification mark on April 1, 2023. It stated that users who wish to maintain the blue verification mark in their accounts must subscribe to the “Twitter Blue” service.

The company's announcement was not surprising, as its CEO, Elon Musk, had previously stated in a tweet that Twitter would cancel old authentication tags, as they were granted in an "empty and absurd" way.
