The results of a new study warn that inactivity and a sedentary lifestyle that tends to sit may increase the amount of anxiety 3 times in adolescents, compared to moderate to vigorous physical activity, which affects the structure and functions of the heart.

According to the "Science Daily" website, recent World Health Organization reports indicate that more than 80% of adolescents around the world do not get enough physical activity on a daily basis.

The study was conducted in collaboration between the Universities of Bristol and Exeter in the United Kingdom and the University of Eastern Finland. It focused on understanding the effect of sedentary time and physical activity on heart structure and function in adolescents, as there is a paucity of measuring movement behavior and ECG in this group.

The study included 530 adolescents aged 17 years, who had complete measurements of fat mass, muscle mass, glucose and fat, and it was noted that both sedentary time and moderate to vigorous physical activity were associated with higher left ventricular mass. However, the increase in heart mass associated with sedentary time (3.8 g/m2) was 3 times higher than the increase in heart mass (1.2 g/m2) associated with moderate to vigorous physical activity.
