Rick T Worthington (1960-2020)
A true horseman has been lost to our industry today..
Rick was the boy from the bush, A Navy man, an incredibly successful Breaker Pretrainer and Trainer.
I first met Rick in the very early 1990’s so many years ago when he was our breaker and Pretrainer and he had horses in the top
stables around the country. I used to love reading his updates on our babies once a week. Not only were they insightful but also often gave you a peek into your horses personalities and character but also a glimpse of Rick’s sense of humour..
He educated some lovely horses for my former employer His Excellency Nassah Looter of Emirates Park. The likes of Faiza Moonflute Darbas Odeascay Be My Bride Courvoisier Al Maher Fatoon Shamekha only to name a few.
A little about the man himself..
Born in Bowral NSW 1960. He left home at 15 to join the Navy and see the world. Rick served 3 years and 18 went ringing in NW NSW and then onto the TOP END NT..
He came home late 1980’s and began breaking in and pretraining horses in 1990 He received a call from The Master TJ Smith asking about breaking in horses and the rest really is history.
The likes of Snitzel, Redouts Choice, Exceed and Excel, Schillarci, Encosta Delargo, Flying Spur went through his hands but to name a few so many great.
He was a crack shot, A Panpac Medal winner having represented Australia in Martial Arts. A true testament of how tough this man was Physically as well as Mentally. Of which he needed all in 2012.
His 20 year marriage has just ended and he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Melanoma. The fight for his life was just starting.
Dr’s operated on Rick leaving massive scars but unfortunately they didn’t get it all. He battled depression losing his wife, 3 children and cancer in 2013 it was a tough year.
Rick dug deep with a mental and physical fortitude that put a lot of us to shame. While holding a country trainers licence while running Danric Lodge breaking and Pretraining he wanted more.
So he set about getting his Metropolitan licence and accruing stables at Warwick Farm he began another chapter of story life were beginning.
169 career Wins and a decent strike rate. Rick was also a board member of the NSW Trainers Association and President and member of the Warwick Farm Trainers association.
Rick was and forever will be a great Horseman.
He was honest hard working perfectionist driven Always a gentleman.
He will be missed by me and so many others.
Rest well Rick you deserve to hang up your boots and helmet.
Its been a difficult pill to swallow today, with the passing of Rick Worthington, he was exceptional man and the reason Nancy and I are still in this beautiful place called Australia, Rick we will miss you as I’m sure many people will, God Bless and Rest In Peace

Vale Rick Worthington. Desperately sad news today. He was so lovely. I’m sure any cancer sufferer is finding this particularly tough news to bear, having known something about what he’d fought so valiantly against. Pictured here after the purchase of his filly Honesty Prevails.

1/2: A stalwart of the Warwick Farm trainers hut, it’s with real sorrow I heard of Rick Worthington’s passing today. He did much for the many colourful WF characters as a NSW Trainers Association Director & his presence will be missed… (cont.)
