Dylan Cunningham served as a South Holland firefighter since 2011. He started as a part-time firefighter before joining the department full time in 2018. He was also a member of the Illinois Army National Guard since 2012, according to village officials. Dylan perished during a training exercise.
The Indiana Law Enforcement Memorial offers its condolences to the South Holland Fire Department in Illinois for Firefighter Dylan Cunningham, 29, who died following an underwater dive training accident Wednesday night near Kankakee.
The incident occurred about 9:30 pm at the Haigh Quarry when paramedics were called for a diver in distress. He was initially transported to Amita St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee before being transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago where he died at 10:40 pm.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation
Firefighter Cunningham joined the department in 2011 before becoming full-time in February 2018. He was also a member of the Illinois Army National Guard since 2012. He was engaged and expecting their first child.
