Japanese surgeons were surprised by a live worm in the tonsils of a 25-year-old girl, after she complained of sore throat and tonsil pain, 5 days after she ate sashimi (raw fish similar to sushi). According to CNN, the medical team found a worm with a length of 1.5 inches (3.81 centimeters) that lived inside the left tonsil, and when it was removed, it was found to be a round type that feeds on fish, which is likely that the girl ate it as part of the raw meal. Doctors warned against eating uncooked or half-cooked fish meals, as it is a fertile environment for such worms, which often attach to the throat area instead of reaching the intestines, causing pain, irritation and persistent coughing.
