The prison terms given to three teenage boys who murdered a cop as they attempted to run away from the crime scene have been referred to the attorney general, who will be looking into claims they are unduly lenient

PC ANDREW HARPER: Good to see that the Attorney General will review the sentences handed down to the three men responsible for the brutal killing of PC Andrew Harper. One was only sentenced to 16 years in prison and the other two just 13 years. I was one of the 22 Conservative MPs who wrote to the Attorney General last week calling for these lenient sentences to be looked at and it’s good that this is now happening.

I know that many are confused about why these men weren’t found guilty of murder and why they won’t be spending the rest of their life behind bars. And there appear to have been a number of attempts by supporters of the killers to distort and derail the court case. At one point the judge had to halt the trial while extra security measures were put in place because of fears that associates of the defendants were trying to intimidate the jury.

I share the anger of PC Harper’s family and I think the majority of the country at the light sentences handed down and the way that this trial has unfolded. I’ll do everything I can to use my position in Parliament to get justice in this case and ensure that our justice system doesn’t keep producing results which are completely out of touch with what the public consider justice to be. I’ve raised this issue before after the reduction of the sentence of one of the men convicted of murdering Tavis Spencer-Aitkens in Ipswich. The leniency being shown in our courts is a wider problem and I’ll keep fighting in Parliament until the law is firmly on the side of victims and the law-abiding public.

Tonight I stand & raise my pint to our Brother PC Andrew Harper; Sadly we could only get you the justice that the jury allowed; May God bless you Lissie & your families! RIP Brother!

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
