“I am so very sad to learn of the passing of Fresno Unified trustee Carol Mills. Board member Mills befriended me in my third year of teaching at Edison High School where her son attended school. She would stop by the office (I was a teacher on special assignment) and we built a great rapport over her passion for education and a common interest in seeing our school succeed as well as raising our sons. As I progressed in my career I worked with her through numerous events at the school sites I served and she was always happiest seeing students thrive. She always took the time to chat with me and check in on how my son was doing and to ask me what my goals were to grow in the district.
I had the tremendous opportunity to have board member Mills as the trustee of the area where I was school principal for almost five years. She was a staunch supporter of me, our school, our staff, and our entire region. She was tireless in her advocacy for our region and attended every single school event whether it be back-to-school night, concerts, or parent meetings and she attended every possible athletic event.
She encouraged me, supported excellence across our schools, loved kids, and was incredibly committed to Fresno Unified becoming the best possible district.
Even though I moved out of Fresno almost six years ago, Board member Mills and I have always kept in touch. She kept abreast of how I was doing in my new role in San Diego, consistently encouraged me to pursue a superintendent role, checked in on my son, and sent the occasional card and email.
My heart is deeply grieved over the loss of Carol Mills. She has been a part of my professional journey since I was 25 years old… my heartfelt prayers go out to her family and the entire Fresno Unified community. She will be deeply missed.”

Tributes To Carol Mills

Across social media users’ timelines are statements that show respect, admiration, and gratitude towards Mills as people mourn the passing.

When we say we stand on the shoulders of giants, we tend to forget that we are also walking amongst them. For me, one of those giants was FUSD Trustee Carol Mills.
It is not often that I am reminded of my teenage years. For many young LGBTQ2+ students, high school is a trying experience, where no one seems to understand or support you. But today I am reminded of one of the first adults and elected officials who listened to me, who took the time to understand the needs of a diverse student body, and spearheaded policies that not only uplifted students of Fresno High, but all of Fresno Unified.
Her passing leaves a huge hole that we can only hope to attempt to fill. And as I continue in my career as a trustee, I hope to inspire students of Fresno County as Carol did; uplift students as Carol did; and help another young student find their voice, find their power, and find their path to serve our community, as Carol did for me.
My thoughts are with her son and family during this difficult time. The entire Fresno Unified Community and Central Valley lost a true public servant today.

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Carol Mills yesterday. Having Bryan Wells come to my house to deliver this heartbreaking news was extremely difficult for me. I am going to miss Carol more than words can express. As our Fresno High Region School Board Trustee, Carol was such an amazing advocate for Fresno High, our students, and our community. She did so much for me, my Dad, and our school. The Papi family is so proud to have called Carol more than just our board member, but most importantly, our friend.
