True Story – The Dead Are Not Dead

Good day everyone, my name is Ijeoma Njoku, I’m from Imo State, from Abamise. Growing up I had a very close childhood friend Darlington, he had a younger sister Uju. I and Darlington we were so close, our friendship was made in heaven, many people in the village used to call us either husband and wife but mostly brother and sisters, our parents made sure we went to the same school because we were inseparable, in fact any where you see Darlington just know I’m around the corner. Later my parents were moving to the city, I cried for days as I knew I was going to bid Darlington good bye, we moved to Lagos and every year I was looking forward to go home to meet my very good friend. As we grew older it became more easier communicating because I had access to my parents phone, I’ll use up all their credit because I needed to hear from Darlington, we will jist about everything happening in the village and the city life. When I finished secondary school I couldn’t wait to go back to the east, in jamb I put Imo state university in Oweri as my first and second choice. My parents will laugh at me saying why don’t you want to school in Lagos, because of Darlington, they new we were inseparable. Things didn’t work out as I planned, my Dad with a help of a friend got me admission into Unilag to study Accounting. Then later Darlington told me he’s relocating to Lagos to stay with his uncle, I stayed in Akoka while Darlington stayed in mile 2 and he sold electronics with his uncle at Alaba.

Funny enough it was when Darlington moved to Lagos that we weren’t able to communicate like we usually do, I would have thought we will be able to see each other frequently but we were both too busy. After I graduated I got a job in a big eatery, I had six branches under me to audit. Darlington was loved and trusted by his rich uncle he was serving, and his uncle sent him to China to purchase all the merchandise, Darlington became a big boy, after his service his uncle established him well, we hardly use to see because he was always traveling, we could only communicate once in a while via phone.

Darlington called me one day saying he wants to go back to the east and set up chains of businesses there, from electronic stores to building projects like hotel or hostels. I advised him not to relocate but his mind was made up, he said we should make money and develop our home and not a foreign land. I haven’t seen Darlington in two years and on the 4th of March 2013 I was troubled and I didn’t know why, my mind kept on directing me towards Darlington, I tried all his lines but it didn’t connect, I said to myself he would have probably traveled out of the country to Dubai or Cuba, cos my friend likes to chop life, but the feeling wasn’t going away that something might be wrong, I said to myself I’ll visit the village but work and other activities of life engaged my time.

On the 10th of April the following month guess who visited me, it was Darlington, I was so happy to see him, he looked pale and somewhat in a hurry, he said he came to ask me for a big favor, that I should accompany him back to the village now, I told him it was impromptu, that I wasn’t packed or psychologically ready for the trip today but we can both go together the following day. He seemed very troubled, I told him I have been having the urge to visit home and I was worried I haven’t heard from him in a while, what’s the issue at home, he said him and papa have issues, that they fought over money he sent for his building projects, papa spent the money on other things and abandoned his. He said he has to go now and I should promise him I’ll be around tomorrow then he left in a hurry.

When I got to the village the next day I first visited Darlington’s house, his mum saw me from afar and called out to Uju to take my bags and she told me to sit, I asked mama I came well, I didn’t know you were all celebrating, all the cooking, canopy and chairs, then I asked where’s Darlington, then they broke the news to me, DARLINGTON IS DEAD, HE DIED OVER A MONTH AGO, we didn’t know how to break the news to you because the two of you were so close, I started laughing, mama what kind of joke is this, death is too serious a thing to toy with, God forbid anything will happen to my Darlington, I stood up and went into the house calling Darlington, they ran after me and held me like they were trying to console me, I was confused. I have always known mama to be a serious person and would never indulge in such expensive jokes, Uju was crying saying Ijeoma they poisoned our Darlington, I said when? Last night? She said he was killed, he died last month on the 4th, I was shaking and my voice seized, they showed me his obituary posters, his portrait at the entrance of the house and the book and a pen, it was beginning to dawn on me that this is a burial after all but I couldn’t believe because Darlington was with me the previous day. Mama took me to where his coffin was and I didn’t want to look inside so I don’t believe that all what they’re Saying is true. I saw my Darlington in the coffin and broke into tears and was rolling on the floor.

It was obvious Darlington wanted me to be present at his burial, it was obvious Darlington wanted me to have an idea who was behind his death, I am a Christian, I’m made to believe after death is judgement, now I know ghosts are real, they can appearing human form. I still shiver when I remember all that transpired, till today I’m not with good terms with Papa (Darlington’s father), I know I have no evidence, neither does the court of law believe in the existence of ghosts. Many back home didn’t believe me, that Darlington came to me, but I know what I saw, even till this day I sometimes feel his presence around, like an Angel watching over me.
