Col Darrington
25+ years ago a skinny kid with big ears arrived in Geelong and somehow ended up on Rovers team coached by Col.
From that day on he would go onto influence my life like only a few have.
He would push me on and off the court to better and give me every opportunity to succeed.
From the inaugural Geelong Basketball Academy, getting me into NITP trainings, all those hours he spent over school holidays with myself, Aaron and the 2 Leanne’s making us better whilst asking for nothing in return.
Off the court I would get extra work to do, coaching courses, watching tapes, drawing up plays and practice plans, anything I needed to succeed.
I still remember all those things clearly, I use the same drills and tell my players off for the same things he would tell me off for.
He was tough but fair and we always had a bit of fun along the way.
When I finished playing it was only a matter of time before moving into coaching and again he was there, I would still ask questions whenever I saw him and he would always take the time to say hi and have a chat, whether in the middle of training session or down at the local shops.
He is truly a great person and I was very lucky to have him as part of my life.
I will miss him and I can’t (Yes Col, that word does exist) can’t believe I won’t get to see him again.
Look & See; Listen & Hear.
Rest In Peace Col.
