Elsa Joubert, an award-winning Afrikaans author, has succumbed to the deadly virus (COVID19) that has taken the lives of so many, at the age of 97, on the 14 of June 2020.

Friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Elsa Joubert.

Elsa Joubert died in Cape Town yesterday due to COVID-19-related causes.
She was a writer who rose to prominence with her novel ‘Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena’, which was translated into 13 languages, as well as staged as a drama and filmed as Poppie Nongena.
Elsa was 97.

RIP Elsa Joubert – made it to 97, but struck down by Covid19. I had long wanted to meet her, mostly because she was rare among Afrikaans authors of her generation in engaging with the rest of the continent.

Celebrated Afrikaans writer, Elsa Joubert, has died in Cape Town at age of 97. She’s a former editor of Afrikaans magazine, Huisgenoot. She wrote numerous novels and is best known for her 1979 novel, “Die Swerfjare van Poppie Nongena” – The long Journey of Poppie Nongena.

Having heard about this great loss, the family of this individual is passing through pains, mourning the unexpected passing of their beloved.

This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.
