A NUMBER 5 IN THE SKY
We have just received the bad news that former Juventus player Francesco Morini has left us yesterday. Morini has played as central defender (number 5) for Sampdoria (1963-1969), for Juventus (1969-1980) and for Toronto Blizzards (1980) while he also played for Italy (11 caps from 1973 until 1975). As a player he won 5 Italian titles, 1 Italian Cup and 1 UEFA Cup. As team director and then team manager, he won 3 Italian titles, 2 Italian Cups, 1 European Champion Clubs’ Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 European Supercup and 1 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.

He was a Juventus man outside and inside. We met him once before a Serie A match in 1990 when Dino Zoff succeeded in taking Juventus out of a long crisis with Schillaci, Casiraghi, Tacconi and De Agostini. He had a lot of class, very kind, smiling, open to everyone, always trying to find the best solutions and compromises for his players and the visitors and guests before, during and after the games.
He never scored a goal in Serie A. He was a real defender. His goal was to stop the opponents.

After the first leg of the UEFA Cup clash between Manchester United and Juventus, he had been accused of having made bad fouls on the English players. The journalists asked him about the foul caused by Pearson as Morini had a big wound on the forehead, he answered: “I could say that he made it on purpose but he didnt. Even though the English newspapers described it as a violent game, it wasnt. The English newspapers are afraid that we will beat the players in the second leg. Wrong. If we want to win with must play well and be intelligent”. Our condolences to his family and friends. Francesco Morini: always in our hearts.
