Celina Ferencz
RIP my dearest Uncle, George Ferencz. He was an amazing person who influenced me and so many other people. He opened my eyes to so many new things, places and cultures, different types of music and art, cuisines I’d never tasted, authors and playwrights I’d never read, classic TV shows and of course live theatre events…stories of our family history…so many jokes and funny stories…the list goes on and on. He is loved and missed by many.
John-Andrew Morrison
This man. George Ferencz is the reason I stayed in this business and work how I work. I met George in 1999 for a reading series at La Mama Galleria and he kept calling me for 20 plus years. I wish every artist a mentor and champion like George Ferencz. I would have left this business many years ago if it were not for him. Most of the folks I work with in theater know that I go by JAM in a rehearsal room and well now in my life. That was because of George. The lovable grump that he was. We were working on who knows which project and he kept going John-Andrew real slow like peanut butter stuck to the top of his mouth. He then said. That’s so much name I’m calling you JAM. Now if this had been anyone else I would have fought them but this was my George. The person who would look at me with the greatest confidence in his eyes and say you kid, you can do anything. So I let him call me JAM and I love it. I started introducing myself as such in other rooms and the thing that I love is that eveytime someone calls me JAM I think of him and remember his words you can do anything. To have someone believe in your talent that much. To have someone believe that your talent was expansive and could do anything. To have someone who kept me involved when no one was at all interested in what I had to offer it meant the world. I remember once telling him I was going to leave the business and he just looked at me sideways and went you’ll be back if you do. That was enough to just go ok hold on a little longer. I will miss the calls to come to La Mama and work on something. “hey kid how are with heights?” That was how he offered me the revival of Tooth of Crime. And he wasn’t telling a lie. The lowest platform was like 15 feet off the ground the top height was like 25 feet of the ground. That was madness and I loved it. “Hey kid can you be a super hero, can you be the chief of police, can you sing this song,” on and on. And I would be like if you think I can do it I’m there. He would always say. You can do anything. I will miss you forever. I will be grateful for you for forever. Thank you for trusting me and allowing me to have my process and celebrating me. George got to see me in A strange Loop and Blues for an Alabama Sky and was like a proud papa bear when I talked to him afterward. I want nothing more than to continue to make you proud George with my work. I will miss running around the theaters with you at La Mama and TNC. I will miss those calls. JAM I have a new project for you. Sally and Jack I’m holding you so tight. RIP.
