Dr. Harold Franklin, a Talladega native and the first Black student to integrate Auburn University in 1964, has passed away according to Terry Metropolitan Mortuary. Dr. Franklin ran into barriers at Auburn when he submitted his thesis to get his master’s degree. The roadblocks ultimately kept Franklin from graduating from Auburn. The university invited Franklin to come back to the school in February of 2020 to finally defend his thesis. Fifty-six years after first walking onto the school’s campus, Franklin strode across the stage to be honored as part of the 2020 fall commencement ceremony at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Dr. Franklin worked at Terry Metropolitan Mortuary in Talladega for more than four decades.
