James Primosch Obituary

James Primosch Obituary – Is Dead – Death: Has Died, Murder, Passed Away – Found Dead, Cause Of Death, Funeral: “Friends, Tim, Taimur, Zach and I are saddened to share news of the passing of our dear friend and collaborator, James Primosch, on April 26. We’ll miss him sorely, and send our heartfelt condolences to his wife Mary, children Mary Rose and Thomas, and to his entire family.

Jim was a composer with a brilliant, singular, and uncompromising voice. He worked with leading artists and ensembles the world over, producing music that engaged the mind and soul. His artistic legacy is deeply connected to his character: rigorous, complex, powerful, wryly humorous, tender, lyrical. His music could embody these traits all at once.
His was a career of remarkable accomplishment. At the University of Pennsylvania, he nurtured aspiring composers for more than 30 years. And with a recent Grammy nomination for The Crossing’s recording of his epic choral work Carthage, the 2020 Virgil Thomson Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters, and major projects under way, his star was ever ascendant.
The PRISM Quartet will keep his music playing. We were so fortunate to have premiered three pieces by Jim: Stratigraphy (with Marilyn Nonken), Short Stories, and Straight Up. Jim was in the process of composing a solo electro-acoustic piece for me, Water Can Assume Any Form, which he partially completed, and which I look forward to sharing with the world when the time is right. In the meantime, we celebrate his beautiful life, and join his beloved family, friends, and colleagues in mourning his passing.
Sincerely,
Matthew Levy

Tributes To James Primosch

Across social media users’ timelines are statements that show respect, admiration, and gratitude towards Primosch as people mourn the passing.

“Emmanuel Music is saddened by the passing of composer and dear friend James Primosch.
With his death from cancer this week in Philadelphia, the Emmanuel community lost in Jim Primosch a unique artistic voice. Since the 1990s Jim was frequently with us for premieres and repeats of his beautiful choral motets, many of them composed for the Emmanuel Choir. Jim often expressed his gratitude for the invitation to write for the choir, but we of course were beneficiaries, receiving from him, and the poets he chose, a distinct and nourishing spiritual viewpoint.
He often wryly noted Emmanuel’s broadly tolerant theological perspective– his pieces reflected his firm and deeply questioned Catholic faith. Many of his pieces adopted words from the later poems of former Emmanuel parishioner and Catholic convert Denise Levertov. With each new Primosch piece Craig, Ryan, and I always welcomed a great gift of generosity and musical imagination. Jim’s music will continue as part of our repertoire and as a reminder of the fellowship which characterizes music at Emmanuel Church.
