June 29, 2020: I am extremely sad to hear that American composer and arranger of popular songs, film music and jazz Johnny Mandel passed away today at age 94, according to Michael Feinstein. Among the musicians he has worked with are Count Basie, Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Anita O’Day, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, and Shirley Horn. Mandel’s most famous compositions include “Suicide Is Painless” (theme from the movie and TV series M*A*S*H), “Close Enough for Love”, “Emily” and “A Time for Love” (nominated for an Academy Award). He has written a great many film scores, perhaps most notably The Sandpiper. The love theme for that film, “The Shadow of Your Smile”, which he co-wrote with Paul Francis Webster, won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Song and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1966.

So heartbroken to hear that we have lost the incomparable Johnny Mandel. My dad wrote the arrangement of Johnny’s theme for M*A*S*H, “Suicide is Painless,” which still makes me weep. So grateful to have been in his presence, the last few years, and hear him conduct his big band multiple times. He once dedicated his iconic song, “Emily,” to my daughter at one of his shows at Vitello’s. Bless you sweet man for all of the beautiful music you created that lives on in my heart, forever, and in the hearts of so many music lovers. One of a kind. Such a gift. I saw this moment happening and asked the young photographer at an ASMAC event, who had no idea who either of these men were, to snap this photo and he did! So grateful he listened to me. The “Shadow of Your Smile” is one of my favorite songs of all time. This is the end of an era. The loss of a true legend.

RIP Johnny Mandel. Sad to hear it. The best people leave this world too fast. Each month and each week. I have never recorded “The Shadow Of Your Smile” neither “Emily”, though maybe I have sung “The Shadow Of Your Smile” somewhere on the stage long years ago. But you were great.

R.I.P. Johnny Mandel. Brilliant, wonderful and thanks to my friend Sherrie Maricle, Don and I met him and witnessed him conducting Sherrie’s Diva Orchestra at Dizzy’s in NYC. What a thrill that was. A beautiful memory of a beautiful man.

I am crushed, truly crushed, to hear of the loss of the great Johnny Mandel, one of my all-time heroes. It has been one of the greatest fortunes of my life to know him, work with him and learn from him, to count him as a friend, and to feel the warmth of his encouragement
