Matthew Goniwe Death – Obituary – Death | Dead – Passed Away
Matthew Goniwe Death – Dead: A great loss was made known to InsideEko. As friends and families of the deceased are mourning the passing of their loved and cherished Matthew Goniwe.
Nyameka Goniwe, wife of slain Matthew Goniwe, died today. She died before seeing justice done in her husband’s brutal murder in 1985. The cruel indifference of the post-apartheid South African State robbed her of justice, peace, and closure. Indeed, it was more than indifference to the callous murders of the Cradock 4. The most senior politicians colluded together with the most senior police and prosecutors to suppress investigations into the murder of Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sicelo Mhlauli, Sparrow Mkonto, and hundreds of others.
A political decision was taken that all apartheid-era perpetrators be allowed to escape justice and accountability. This is not speculation. The National Prosecuting Authority has admitted under oath in a recent court case that it was political interference that killed off these cases. A former head of the authority has set out in detail how cabinet ministers and senior party functionaries ordered him to down tools on these cases. With every month that goes by more suspects, witnesses and family members die. Yet, even today, there is little sign of urgency on the part of the authorities. This is so even though the evidence has been sitting in inquest and commission records since the early 90s. Indeed, the investigation docket in the Cradock 4 case has gone missing from a prosecutor’s office. The families, quite understandably, view this as confirmation that the protection afforded to apartheid-era criminals has not ended. We are not aware of any investigation into the possible theft of the docket, not to mention the possible cover-up. This speaks volumes. One could be forgiven for thinking that the criminal justice system remains captive to unscrupulous forces.
To date, the President, Ministers of Justice and Police, and indeed the government itself, maintain their strict silence on the suppression of these cases. No expression of regret, remorse or apology has been offered by any official for their deep betrayal of victims of past atrocities. This perhaps is hardly surprising given the main preoccupation of those running South Africa’s ruling party, which is brazen self-enrichment. There is no time for morality or decency. There is no time to attend to those whose loved ones laid down their lives for our democracy. Post-apartheid South Africa failed Nyameka Goniwe. We should all hang our heads in collective shame.
