A #Galway boxing legend, he achieved fame when he trained Francis Barrett to become the first Traveller to represent #Ireland at the Olympic Games (Atlanta, 1996)

He was also a barber and a mighty character!

I was sorry to hear of the passing of a legendary son of Galway, Michael ‘Chick’ Gillen. A great man who engaged, entertained, and added to the life of the city and its people over many decades.

My thoughts are with his family and many friends at this sad time.

So sorry to hear of the sad passing of boxer, barber, bouncer, mentor & all round #Galway legend Michael ‘Chick’ Gillen. He taught my Dad to box, & I’d grown up hearing stories; I was delighted to have met him in his prime & he kindly let me photograph him for some artwork.
