Today 05/10/ 2017 is world teachers day, teachers all over the world are being celebrated today and the question that gives me concern when it comes to teachers in our country Nigeria is. How many teachers in this country know their roles?
If am not mistaken up to half of the teachers in our schools engaged in teaching because it is the only available job.
A good number of them do not know their roles as teachers and as such limits themselves to what an ordinary person perceive a teacher to be.
The role of a teacher is clearly more than just planning and executing lesson plans.
In our society, the Christians see Jesus as their teacher, the islams see Mohamend as their teacher, traditionalists see their deities as their teacher. Looking at the level of influence these instructors have on humans in this part of our world I bet you if classroom teachers know their role they can also have such influence not only on their students but the entire country.
A lay man philosophical approach towards given an explanation of what the role of a classroom teacher should be is that a classroom teachers role is to teach her students what he or she is set out to teach.
Even though one would agree to an extent that the above is Among the role of a teacher. It can also be said that the world today sees teachers beyond that.
Teachers are expected to be role models, mentors, surrogate parents, instructors, counsellors, teachers are the medium in which every society achieves its educational goals and in achieving that the nation achieves its full potentials. Elementary school teachers are often the sole source of a student’s learning experience. What students learn in their formative years can shape how they are in the future.
When teachers fail to realize their roles and know that whatever a society becomes depends on them and parents. The society in which they belong would produce leaders that would not pay them salary when due, fail to promote them, train and retrain them.
What do you expect of students that you have sex with, student you take money from just to pass them, students you insult in present of their fellow students because they fail a class work, students you do not inspire, student you send out of class because they did not buy your textbook. Maybe if teachers realize that students do not just look up to them to just teach them what is written in a book then they would know that a lot is expected of them.
Learning can only take place when there is a relatively permanent change in behavior. What are the behaviors of the leaders in government whom you taught or the behaviors of the youths who pass through your class? If their behaviors are not palatable then it is either you taught them wrongly or you did not teach them at all.
I call on all the teachers in our country to stand up and please help better our society the responsibility rest on them and parents. Every individual including those in the government are their products they should not expect anything more, when almost all what they have is what they gave to them.
When a child is raised on a strong and sound morals nothing can influence him or her to deviate.
