I read on Twitter that Philip Rousseau (Catholic University of America) passed away last night. For me, and I guess for many other scholars in the field, he will always be the one who completely changed our understanding of early monasticism. His books on Pachomius, Jerome, John Cassian, and Basil the Great will remain an inspiration to future generations of scholars. RIP.
I met Philip Rousseau at my first NAPS when I was a nervous grad student who had nothing interesting to say. I met him at another NAPS a few years later, and he remembered me. In those two interactions, I met a wonderful human. Say hi to Basil up there.

Philip Rousseau passed away last night. What a significant loss. He was a delight to be around and a truly great thinker in the field of Early Christian studies. He welcomed me to the DC area academic community with kindness and good humor. He will be missed
