Italians who use English and other foreign words in official communication could face fines of up to 100,000 euros ($108,705) under new legislation introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's "Brothers of Italy" party.

A member of the lower house, Fabio Rampelli, introduced the legislation, which has the support of the prime minister.

While the legislation covers all foreign languages, it specifically targets "Anglomania" or the use of English words, which the draft says "insults and humiliates" the Italian language, adding that it is even worse because the UK is no longer part of the European Union.

“It is forbidden to use the English language in official documents, including (abbreviations and names) of job titles in companies operating in the country.”
