Unfortunately I feel it’s time to finally announce the passing of my beloved father Rodney Herm Pardey AKA “Senior.” Dad passed away on August 1st after suffering a major stroke on June 29th. The final week of dad’s life as he knew it took place on the Oregon coast with his three children and grandson – which was all he ever wanted to do if circumstances would allow.
Here dad is pictured with his mother, who also passed away at age 98 this last March. Grandma Ruth owned the same beach house in Neskowin for 30+ years where we spent the precious last days of my dad’s life. God, life is terribly unfair.
My siblings and I – along with so many others – are going to be missing this lion of man for a very long time. He was larger than life. He was a rock star who hit the game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth time and time again. It was an honor to be able to say I witnessed it first hand.
Dad’s story is likely known to many of you, but to those who don’t know it, he was one of the greatest poker players of his era and perhaps the top 2 or 3 greatest Seven Card Stud players ever. In fact, dad had a 50-year career as a professional poker player. No matter where he stands in the pantheon of greats, that one fact alone should convince you he was no ordinary man.
Ryan, Lucy, and I just went through the worst five weeks of our lives as we dealt with the horrible effects of what a severe stroke can do to a beautiful brain. I wish I could find you a silver lining. But I can’t. Because my love for him and his love for us was his true legacy on this planet.
I plan to tell dad’s story in greater detail someday. But this is all I can muster for now. Pass the word along that a poker legend’s final chapter has come to a close.
I love you, dad. I hope to live a life that would make you proud
