Ronnie Govender was a playwriting genius, enthralling audiences, fighting injustice and winning awards. He used his talent, skill and intellect to help change our world for the better. I was blessed to know uncle Ronnie for more than 30 years. In August 2015, he agreed to be a guest on my talk show. I was humbled and privileged to share the hour with him. He was always so insightful and inspiring. In April 2014, I was fortunate to be on stage with him when the Durban University of Technology conferred an Honorary Doctor of Technology in Arts and Design to Ronnie Govender, for his contribution to literature and the arts, as well as his contribution to democracy, peace and justice in South Africa. Dr Ronnie Govender has left a truly wonderful legacy. His work will always speak volumes of his sheer brilliance. Sincere condolences to the family and friends. Rest In Peace uncle Ronnie. Hamba Kahle Ronnie Govender. May you going singing!!

I just heard that South African Theatre icon Ronnie Govender has passed away. Many years ago I got a chance to have long chats and listen to many of his anecdotes while I was editing material for one of his shows – an experience I will never forget. A Sad day indeed. RIP Thatha, what a force you were! We will always be aware of those who write discrimination, oppression, subjugation, and those who act in the same, we will continue to stand in their way, and try and change things for the better wherever we can.
