Sylvester Francis, the founder of the small but highly respected Backstreet Cultural museum that features an array of exhibits from various aspects of African American culture in New Orleans neighborhoods, died Tuesday at age 73.
New Orleans has lost a giant. I feel like I have a hole in my soul. My friend mentor and running partner for 30 years Sylvester Francis has passed on to the Glory Land. Respected and loved in the city and around the world for his deep cultural knowledge. The term “Culture Bearer” has become a buzz word in the past few years and no one has exemplified that term more than Sylvester. He created a museum to share the street culture of New Orleans’ African American/Afro-Creole people. The Backstreet Museum was purely designed from his geniousity. Countless masters and doctoral degree recipients owe their thesis and dissertation bases to Sylvester. HBO smash hit shows like TREME were created largely from the hang that takes at the Backstreet. We are saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Sylvester Francis Sr, founder of BackStreet Cultural Museum. He dedicated his life to championing and preserving the Black Culture of the city of New Orleans. He will truly be missed, and his legacy will endure forever.

Sylvester Francis, founder of the Backstreet Cultural Museum has died. Francis founded the Treme institution in 1999 as a means of highlighting the New Orleans traditions of brass bands, Social Aid & Pleasure Plubs and Mardi Gras Indians.
Today we lost a great friend, collaborator and cultural icon, Sylvester Francis, the fascinating Tremé photographer and museum curator who owned The Backstreet Cultural Museum. For those of us who had the privilege of knowing and working with him, I know his passing will be a huge loss to the community as well as his wife Anita, daughter Dominique, and brother, Robert, all of whom contributed to the upkeep of this New Orleans treasure.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
