With a very broken heart, I have to share that COVID has taken My dear Uncle Tom Vint and he has gone to be with his Lord and Savior early this morning. Please remember my Aunt Georgie Vint and cousins Tim and Mandy Troia in your prayers the next couple days. Uncle Tom was a lot of things to a lot of people and levels the legacy we all hope to leave. One that we know he loved us, he was ALWAYS kind, he always had good jokes, he would do anything for his wife that he adored. He took JD Davis and I in as his adoptive kids (so did my aunt) when we were stationed in Omaha 9 years ago. He was my fellow baker/gardener/bird lover, JD’s golf partner and mentor, and a 3rd grandpa to our boys. Sunday Family dinner will never be the same…we will never have 4 pies to choose from for 5 1/2 people. 🤣 He has a special penguin straw at our house, he bought Jack his first LEGO set and his first baseball glove but most of all he always showed my family Jesus. We always knew we could ask him questions about the Bible. If you have a minute please read the captions on the pictures. Uncle Tom this one is hard to swallow for us but we know exactly where you are likely eating a dessert on the best day of your life!
The world lost one of the kindest, gentlest, and most loving people today. He was my Uncle Tom. My Dad’s kid brother. My cousins’ Dad. Dog dad to many.
He fought COVID-19 for over a month, the last three weeks on a respirator. Despite his strength, his faith in God, the love of his friends and family, and the heroic, daily efforts of the doctors and nurses who cared for him around the clock, he was unable to fight off infections and complications brought about by this virus. He lost his fight today, on all days, his daughter’s birthday.
To Aunt Georgie, Cousins Mandy and Tim, my Dad, Uncle Bill, Uncle Jon, Aunt Sam, the entire extended Vint family and your closest friends, I am so, so sorry. Uncle Tom was one of the genuine good guys. Despite the many years and hundreds of miles that had separated us, I’ll miss him. My only comfort today lies in the fact that he has touched the lives of so many wonderful people. He will always live on in that way. Thanks for making this a kinder world, Uncle Tom.
Good Thursday morning on this the 3rd day of September 2020,
COVID-19 has claimed the life of another member of the AP family.
Tom Vint, who retired from the AP in 2005 after sports writing and other roles in the Omaha bureau, battled the virus for a month before he died Wednesday at the age of 72.
His former colleagues remembered him for being unflappable under deadline pressure and patient when training new staffers. Family and friends knew Vint for his willingness to help others and his passion for coaching youth sports.
Beyond his journalistic accomplishments, Vint was a lover of dogs, particularly Labradors, and wrote a book in 2011, “Walking With Dog,” that showed what dogs can teach their owners about the ways of God.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
