Awful news. RIP (Fields Medalist) Vaughan Jones, perhaps best known for the “Jones polynomial” in knot theory, but contributing broadly to many other fields, including conformal field theory, von Neumann algebras, etc etc..

This is very sad news. Vaughan Jones won the Fields Medal in 1990 for breakthrough results connecting knot theory, statistical mechanics, and algebra. He was a great mathematician & also a great speaker. We had been looking forward to his public lecture at the European Congress.
