This year, the International Dark Sky Society called on people around the world to reconnect with the dark, starry sky, and learn how to reduce the negative effects of light pollution on humans, wildlife, and ecosystems during International Dark Sky Week (IDSW). for 2023, which takes place from April 15-22.
Astronomer Salman Al Ramadan explained to “Okaz” that the Dark Sky Week is an event that takes place during the week in which the new moon comes in April, and it is organized by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), which works to protect the night sky for present and future generations.
The association invites people around the world to reconnect with the dark, starry sky and learn how to reduce the negative impacts of light pollution on humans, wildlife and ecosystems during the 2023 International Dark Sky Week, which will take place from April 15-22.
The light pollution resulting from man-made light sources is increasing worldwide by 9.6% annually, which threatens wildlife and ecosystems, negatively affects human health, wastes energy, contributes to global warming, and obscures the vision of stars, planets and galaxies.
Events this year 2023, organized by Dark Sky advocates, delegates, affiliates and venues, include night walks, astrophotography lessons, star parties, statements and demonstrations of the benefits of the dark sky for humans, wildlife and ecosystems.
