Authorities say a 3-year-old child was shot this evening in Jefferson County.

The incident happened at about 5:30 p.m. in Wintersville near Kroger grocery store, according to Wintersville Mayor Robert Martin. The toddler succumbed to her injuries hours later and the mother has been detained in connection to the incident.
The mother and baby were transported to the hospital for treatments outside of the Kroger in Winterville. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has taken over the investigation and more information was not immediately released.
