Libya is witnessing a military rapprochement between the military and security leaders in the east and west regions, in a move that may lead to unifying the military and security establishment and achieving consensus among the competing forces regarding the organization of elections.
Yesterday evening (Sunday), members of the 5+5 Military Committee of the Libyan Army met with the commander of the western military region, Major General Osama al-Juwaili, in the city of Zintan, in the west of the country, in the presence of military personnel from the capital, Tripoli.
This meeting came a week after a meeting of prominent military and security leaders in the eastern and western camps of the country under the auspices of the UN mission, which was hosted by Tripoli, during which it was agreed to support efforts to hold elections and form a unified government, work to unify military institutions through the chiefs of staff, and unify security institutions and the rest of the state institutions. .
Meanwhile, the city of Benghazi, located in the east of the country, is preparing to host a similar meeting in the coming days to complete discussions on unifying security institutions and foreign mercenaries, rejecting foreign interference, and securing elections.
In this context, local and foreign parties welcomed the military rapprochement in Libya, and expressed their hope that it would lead to a halt to the deterioration of the security situation and lead to holding elections before the end of this year.
Libyan analysts confirmed that this step is moving in the right direction as long as it serves the Libyan interest. Observers considered that such meetings could break the barrier of mistrust, pointing out that unifying security and military efforts will lead to creating grounds for holding elections and will be one of the most important keys to achieving stability and progress at the political level.
They believe that this military rapprochement between East and West is the most important progress towards unifying Libya and its institutions, especially the security and military institution that has been divided for more than 7 years between armed militias, competing military brigades, and security services in the Libyan west and a unified army in the east of the country, which was reflected negatively on the security situation in Libya.
