Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and his Syrian counterpart Faisal Al-Miqdad, who arrived in Cairo today (Saturday), held talks on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. The two ministers discussed developments in the region and the world, amid news of arrangements for a meeting between the two presidents after Eid Al-Fitr.
The visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to Egypt, which is the first in nearly 12 years, comes in response to a visit that the Egyptian Foreign Minister made to Damascus several weeks ago, in his first visit to Syria since the beginning of the Syrian crisis in 2011, to support it in facing the repercussions of the devastating earthquake, commissioned by the President. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to offer condolences to the earthquake victims, and to convey a message of support and aid in the human ordeal.
Political researcher Ahmed Refaat considered that the visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to Egypt paves the way directly for the official return of relations between the two countries, explaining that the timing of the visit is important, as it coincides with the anniversary of the October Victory on the tenth of Ramadan, the sixth of October, stressing the existence of a common desire between the two countries to expand more relationships between them.
