The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jassim Al-Budaiwi, said: The current conditions are favorable for engaging in peace talks to reach a political solution in Yemen. In a statement today (Tuesday), Al-Budaiwi called for unity and upholding the supreme interest of Yemen, so that it may enjoy peace, security and stability.
The UN envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, warned last Sunday that Yemen is facing a critical time, calling for a permanent end to the conflict.
And he considered that the truce that was reached on April 2, 2022, with UN mediation, is a moment of hope, pointing out that it is largely in place despite the end of its reactors last October. He stressed that the risks are still great, pointing to the need to protect the truce gains and build on them in order to reach more humanitarian measures, a nationwide ceasefire, and a sustainable political settlement.
It is noteworthy that the United Nations had announced on August 2, 2022, that the Yemeni parties had agreed to extend the armistice for an additional two months, according to the same conditions, from August 2 to October 2, 2022.
The extension came after a previous UN armistice that came into effect in April 2022 on all fronts of fighting in Yemen for a period of two months, and stipulated stopping offensive military operations by land, sea and air inside Yemen and across its borders, and holding a meeting between the parties to agree to open roads in Taiz and other governorates to improve freedom of movement. Individuals inside Yemen, and facilitating the entry of 18 ships carrying fuel to the ports of Hodeidah in western Yemen within two months, in addition to allowing two flights to and from Sana’a International Airport per week. However, this extension expired last October 2022, and the Yemeni parties have not yet reached an agreement to renew it.
