Robert Lee Elder Death – Cause of Death – American professional golfer, Robert Lee Elder passed away on the 28th of November 2021. Robert became the first African-American to play in the Masters Tournament in 1975, where he missed the cut. He was invited to the tournament after he won the 1974 Monsanto Open. He died at the age of 87. Robert was born on the 14th of July 1934 in Dallas, Texas, to Charles and Almeta Elder.
In 1959, Robert joined the Army, and was sent to Fort Lewis, Washington. While at Fort Lewis, he was under the command of Colonel John Gleaster who was an avid golfer. Robert became the first African American to play in the Masters in 1975. According to Wikipedia, Robert and his then wife, Rose Harper, established the Lee Elder Scholarship Fund in 1974. The fund was developed to offer monetary aid to low-income young men and women seeking money for college.
In April 2021, Elder took part in the traditional ceremonial start to the Masters. He was a good man and a great player. He will be greatly missed by all.
