Today (Saturday), the Venezuelan authorities arrested 10 officials and 11 businessmen, and issued arrest warrants for 11 others, according to what was announced by the Public Prosecutor of Venezuela, Tariq Saab, stressing the expansion of investigations in the fight against corruption.
"We are talking about one of the most shocking plots in the past years, a conspiracy involving officials and businessmen who benefited from corruption and young men who participated in corruption and money laundering," the attorney general told reporters. He added, "21 of the detainees are facing charges of seizing public assets, money laundering, promoting the sale of stolen tools, and a criminal association."
Saab said the officials involved may also face charges of high treason.
Oil Minister Tariq El-Aissami resigned, last Monday, against the backdrop of investigations into accusing the state company of corruption, and the arrest of a number of government officials and judges, and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro appointed a new minister.
President Ma Duro confirmed that he is directly supervising the investigation into corruption cases in which more than 21 officials and judges were arrested last week, confirming the appointment of Pedro Telichia, Director of the Venezuelan National Oil Company, as Minister of Oil.
