The Regional Director of the World Health Organization in the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, revealed that the war in Sudan has claimed the lives of about 330 people, and injured about 3,200 others.
He said in tweets published by the organization's account in the eastern Mediterranean on Twitter, today (Thursday), according to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, 20 hospitals have been forcibly closed due to attacks or lack of resources, while 8 other health facilities remain vulnerable due to staff exhaustion or lack of doctors and supplies.
He called on all parties to declare a sustainable humanitarian truce as soon as possible so that those caught up in the fighting can seek refuge, and civilians have access to food, water, medicine and essential items. He pointed out that the international organization is monitoring a painful deterioration of the already very difficult humanitarian situation in Sudan.
Al-Mandhari added that the World Health Organization remains committed to its long-term partnership in Sudan, and will continue to work to achieve its mission there, but he warned that this can only be done in an environment that allows work without obstacles and without exposing its employees to risks. He called for safe passage for health workers, patients and ambulances. He said that the organization intends to reinforce its staff in Sudan as soon as restrictions on travel there are lifted, and that as soon as the situation permits, the organization will send more medical supplies.
